About workshop

Almost every business or industry faces different challenges which could be solved using mathematical methods, analytical and creative thinking. Decisions that companies make everyday, e.g. how to optimize its activities, how to grow forward, get bigger profit and face less risks, etc. should be based on mathematical calculations and they have the substantial added value for creating new economic opportunities for companies.

Workshop of mathematical solutions in business and industry (ESGI) – the first event in Lithuania and the Baltic States during which a team of researchers dedicates one week to solve real-world industry problems using mathematical methods and discussing in teams.

Workshop of mathematical solutions in business and industry is held since 2016 and this year will be the fourth one (ESGI 176).

Interested?

Does your business have a real-world problem which could be tackled with the help of scientists?

Or maybe you want to empower mathematical modelling to check original and untested ideas in your business?

We welcome companies from all areas of industry and business to propose the problems.

Are you a mathematician or a computer scientist who would like to take part in an event that solves real-world business problems?

Would you like to work with a competitive team of scientists, gain new experience, knowledge or ideas?

We invite all academic staff from PhD students to professors working within areas of applications of mathematics.

About

Purpose

The goal of the Workshop of Mathematical Solutions in Business and Industry (ESGI) is to promote cooperation between business and science in order to solve business problems by using mathematical methods. The Workshop brings together researchers and business representatives for solving real-world problems that modern companies face.

The Concept of Event

During week-long workshop participants work in groups and solve tasks that business representatives have introduced. The researchers’ team consults with the company’s delegate throughout the whole event if necessary. Teams present the results of their work one the last day of the Workshop – problem solution or recommendations are provided for the company.

Solutions to the problems provided by the companies from business and industry working in areas such as energy, production, electronics, environment protection, finance, medicine, commerce etc. are being searched during the Workshop.

Arrival

The most comfortable way to reach Palanga is by bus or car. Bus lines from the major Lithuanian cities are going directly to Palanga bus station. If travelling from other locations, the most convenient way is at first reach Klaipėda by bus or train, and later take a bus to Palanga (buses from Klaipėda central station move to Palanga every 30 minutes). More information on how to reach Palanga can be found here.

If you are planning to arrive by car you should be aware that there is a payment for parking all across the city. The fee is collected every day twenty four hours from 15th of May until 15th of September (inclusive). Payment for parking in dedicated parking places can be paid by SMS. Charges vary depending on the parking location and duration. Information about the parking charges can be found here.

Guests from other countries can reach Palanga by plane. The planes from Copenhagen (Denmark), Oslo (Norway), Riga (Latvia), London (Luton, United Kingdom), London (Stansted, United Kingdom), Warsaw (Poland) , during the summer season – from Moscow (Russia), Minsk (Belarus), Kiev (Ukraine) have direct flights to the international Palanga airport. The schedules of Palanga international airport are here.

Palanga

Palanga is a Lithuanian resort near the Baltic sea, 25 km to the north of Klaipeda. Palanga municipality includes settlements of Palanga, Šventoji ir Būtingė. For a long time Palanga has been one of the most popular resorts in Lithuania. It is a particularly admired region not only by Lithuanians but also by foreign guests.

The resort is famous by the large nice beach, well-developed infrastructure, beautifully managed public spaces, extensive possibilities for accommodation, food and other services. Visitors who like an active lifestyle may choose riding bicycles or horses and many other attractions.

Here you can find more information about leisure activities in Palanga.

For Companies

Different companies make daily decisions every day – how to optimize their activities, improve their performance or increase profits. Solutions based on mathematical calculations and methods can bring significant benefits.

The main purpose of the workshop is to help business and industry solve problems using mathematical methods. Is your company facing a problem for which you are looking a solution for? Are you looking forward to run business more effectively? Maybe seeking for brand new ideas?

Tell us about any problem or expectation by filling-in the online registration form and provide your challenge for scientists.

Workshop date

12-16  June 2023

Proposal of Problems

We welcome you to provide problems from any area of business and industry. By applying mathematical methods during the Workshop we are able to optimize business and manufacturing processes, evaluate durability, identify, analyse and predict errors and failures, analyse sales and predict the risk of activities in an enterprise, estimate the effectiveness of the activities, solve problems in security of electronic data and tasks in encryption systems, solve problems in personal healthcare monitoring, medical diagnostics and drug research, optimize logistic processes and try out any other crazy idea of yours by the means of mathematical modelling.

The problem you provide does not have to be formulated mathematically. The organisers will give advice and will “translate” the task provided to mathematical problem by cooperating together with you. If you are not sure if your problem is suitable, do not hesitate to contact the organisers to give them a chance to help you.

We invite to submit a problem by completing online registration form below. In case of any questions do not hesitate to contact via e-mail mathworkshop@ktu.edu

Terms of Participation

In order to work effectively during the Workshop and to achieve expected results, a representative from the company participates in the event throughout all days of the Workshop and consults the scientists on questions related to activities of the enterprise, the provided data and on other inquiries.
On the first day of the Workshop the representative from the business presents the problem to be solved at the workshop (about 10 minutes is dedicated for the presentation) while on the last day he attends the presentation of the results.

Participation Fee

The submission itself is free, but there will be a charge for each problem selected for the Study Group. The level set this year is 5000 EUR + VAT. The charge is to cover organisation and running costs. For more information please contact the organisers mathworkshop@ktu.edu
